The band

Out of my Head.

This is a band made up of two friends that perform rock-pop music to the nation and are hoping to make it in America with their up and coming Album, 'Wasting Away'. This album will be their second with their manager, Chris Davies who manages other artists like T-Pain and Michael Bublé. They have 12 brand new songs on this album with a possible limited edition, deluxe edition of 15 songs. They have yet to release a song from their new album as it is still under wraps in the studio for final editing and recordings. They first made their appearance on BBC Radio 1's introducing stage only a year ago. This scheme helps support undiscovered, unsigned artists and helps them get into the music industry and recognised by the professionals.

Members: Hannah Royce- Lead Singer
         Lizzie Vince- Singer

Inspiration: Florence and the Machine, Colplay, Keane,Muse,Emeli Sande, Wretch 32

Music Sound: Edgy, Somewhere between Rock and Pop, an unusual but catchy, vocal and slightly Alternative.
On my cover I will use just Hannah Royce and I will include pictures of both artists on the double page spread and contents. This will then allow the reader to see the band as a whole.

Magazine Inspiration

The top two covers include some amazing visual effects that I wish to recreate in some way. This will allow me to make a magazine cover that stands out above all of the others.

The bottom three magazines have either a busy feel to them or a simplistic feel to them and that is what I want to do with my magazine cover. I wish to make it very simplistic but also busy at the same time which will be difficult to do without making the magazine looking wrong.
This is my Inspiration and magazines that are similar to what I want to create.

New Colour Scheme

I have found that using the other colour schemes meant that the colours were too bright and didnt fit with the style of the magazine. I have therefore changed the colour scheme slightly to include a duller blue but one that fits well with the theme of the magazine. This enables my magazine to be better whilst still standing out from the other competing magazines. I have kept with the blue theme but whilst the colours are not bright or vibrant as the previous ones where it still contrasts well against the black and white.

Font styles

These are the fonts that I would use for the name of my music magazine. With these I will select a final font style. i think they are all bold and they would stand out against the magazine background. they are all different and all will give me a unique feel to the magazine. They are quite basic and they arent too elaborate. All good magazines use a simple font for their magazine cover. they have a strong and bold heading which is what i think these fonts stand for.

Name of the magazine

For the name of the magazine I wanted something short, catchy and something that is easily identified. I wanted the name to link in with music as I am creating a music magazine. The success of any magazine all starts with the name of the magazine. Some of the most successful magazines have short catchy name. Magazines like Q, NME, Mojo, Kerrang. All of these are successful as people always remeber their names and they also produce amazing magazines issue and issue. Their names tend to be shown all the way through the magazine to keep the identity of the magazine. That is why I wanted a short, catchy name. I started to play around with the symbols of Play, Pause and Stop and tried to think of words that could include any of the symbols. I then came up with three names, Play, Pause and The Gramaphone. I then looked online to see if any of the names had been used on any other magazines- Play turned out to be used already so I was then left with The Gramaphone and Pause. I decided that I would go with 'Pause' as it was a universal symbol and name unlike 'The Gramaphone' which would be limited to the people who knew about Gramaphones; which might also give the impression that the music will be more Golden Oldies than latest Pop, Rock and Folk. So the name that I will be using will be PAUSE.

Colour Scheme

Most music magazines have the colour scheme of Black, White and Red. Magazines like Q and NME use this colour scheme as it has proved that it is the most popular colours on a magazine as these colours have sold the most magazines both nation wide and worldwide. This is becoming the 'theme' for the majority of magazines. That is why I wanted to use a different colour to show that this music magazine is actually different to everything else that is out there. The idea of using greens will give it a more neutral feel to the magazine whereas the blue is bold, simple and stands out against red. I will also use the colours of black and white with it and I will make it so the blue or green isnt overpowering and too bright against the rest of the magazine cover.

Pitch Feedback

Overall the magazine reception has been good. By making the presentation using the animoto improved it visually and the music made it easy to watch but keeping with the theme of the magazine. There was only a few small points that pople picked up on and perhaps I could of made clearer in my 25 word presentation. the questions that were asked are:

What is Folk?
Why do you have the magazine covers of NME and Q on the presentation?
Why did you pick that as your Inspiration?
Why pick the Blues and the Greens?

My answers to these questions were:
Folk music is when an artist sings with just their voice and a guitar. It is a somewhere between Country and Soul music.

I have used the covers of NMe and Q in the presentation as they arer the closest type of music magazine out there that is similar to what my magazine is about. It has a variety of different artists and a range of genres.

I picked these magazines as inspiration as I enjoy the special effects and the visual effects that is on the magazine covers or how bold the covers are next to any other. I liked them because they were simple yet affective.

I have picked blues and greens as the possible colours that I am going to use as they are different to other magazines which use black, white and red. The colours will stand out against the others and will attract more customers.

With these questions I was able to see where I could improve my work and also the points in which my work was weak and I was then able to do that bit better so I could improve my work.

Audience Profile

Hannah is 17, she loves anything to do with music, rock, pop, blues, Jazz. She loves downloading new tracks and Albums as well as listening to the radio whilst she is working. Mainly she enjoys looking out for up ans coming bands and music artists, she loves being the first to notice a new band and being able to tell all of her friends. She would like a magazine that she could use to discover new bands, new tracks and the latest albums. She would like to have a magazine that tells her which artists will be the biggest in the next month and which bands are doing tours and which bands are working on a new album and new sounds. She would also like reviews on bands as well as exclusive interviews in her favourite bands. She doesnt want to spend too much as she is only a student. That is why she would like a monthly magazine that is full with relavent information and not filled with adverts and pointless junk.

Publishers

Bauer Media Group
This is the largest privately owned publishing company within Europe. It produces many different medias including magazines, radio and TV. The top magazines include Closer, Heat, Empire, kerrang and Q. Q is the closest competion to my magazine as it includes that more generalised genres or music like Q includes. All of Bauer Media Groups magazines are all aimed at the same age range which allows them to keep a theme running throughout all of the magazines. My magazine is very similar to Q, although it would only be the only serious competition as not many other magazines cover the range that both Pause and Q do. Although i feel as if mine is unique in the way that it focuses its main attention on undiscovered and up and coming artists rather than the already famous singers.
Bauer Media group is responsible for editing the magazine, making sure it is shop worthy and then advertising ang and marketing it and putting it out to the media. this publishing group must be very experienced and very good at creating magazines as it has successfully published many magazines across many different interests and genres.

Moodboard

This picture is my moodboard. I have used different magazine covers and also album covers as well as artists to create the moodboard. The front covers I have used show both my love for rock music with Muse and also the amazing editing that I would hope to include in my magazine. I reallly like the way that the Q on Q magazine is smashed and the way the Matt bellamy is in mid swing showing the old ways of rock. I also like the red hot chilli peppers editing as it shows him as a part robot, part man which emphasises the caption of 'RED HOT CHILLI PEPPERS WON'T BE KILLED!'. The background art is urban styled and features on Coldplays latest album Mylo Xyloto. I like graffiti element to the page and the way that many different things have been sprayed onto the wall and it makes Coldplays album appear more interesting. Coldplay is also one of my favourite bands along with Muse, Olly Murs, The Script, Kelly Clarkson and Christina Perri. I also like the idea of Olly Murs album art with the many different versions of him,m taking the inspiration from the three elvis's picture created by Andy Warhol. The hands on The Script's most recent album,Science and faith. The interlocking hands are the main image and that makes it a better album art as it is simple and shows of the title easily.

Creating the magazine

I used the font Cabaret Voltaire from the website Da Font. This was an ideal font for my magazine as it showed off the title well and made it unique to the magazine and gave it a style.

The pictures which i have used comes from my own camera and i have edited them so they are black and white. i have then edited them to make the shadows and highlights contrast more to give a unusual effect.

These pictures have been edited from the originals and used on the contents page of the magazine. I used the photoshop settings to create a black border around them and then fill the background so it was red to keep in theme of my magazine.

Evaluation

Magazine cover:
My magazine is bold and stands out which is what I wanted but I also think that it is too bright and may deter people from looking at it and reading it. For my music magazine I will need to tone the colours down and make the main image in colour instead of black and white. I will also take more opictures to choose from so I am not restricted to what I can use and edit with. I will also change the style of my writing as it will need to go with the genre of the magazine as I have made the font specific to this magazine.

Magazine Contents Page:
I really like the contents page as it is simple and is bold. It also tells you topics that are in the magazine, however I think that I should include more topics compared to what I have. I also like the idea of having the pictures in a box and a number next the picture of them. As with the magazine cover I am going to make the pictures in colour as well as tone down the red or maybe even change it completely.

Overall:
As a whole it works well the theme of black, white and red was effective as it gave it a theme throughout the pages and that I liked. The style of the font and the colours I used for the font was effective as it linked well with the genre of the magazine and made it more appealing to the audience. I also liked the layout of the pages and the styling of the magazine generally. I will use a similar type of design for my music magazine but will change some key features to improve it and make it better.

Inspiration

Colour scheme:
I have picked three colours as this is what the most popular magazines use. I have decided to use black and white as well as red is to be shown as a popular colours on any type of magazine. By only having three colours it also keeps the page simple and eye catching.

Pictures:
All of my pictures are of my friends and they show different types of emotions that will link to the topics that I am covering in my preliminary music magazine. I wil also make the pictures black and white with a red background as this allows the colours of the magazine to stand out on the page. I have also used the idea of books and folders to link it back to the school theme.

Layouts:
I have gathered ideas for layouts from Q and NME- music magazines- and linked them together and also changed them around so they would appear to be totally different to the magazines which I gained my ideas from.

The NME magazine cover was full of words and pictures to show what was in that issue, but i found that although it was packed with news about different artists the front of the magazine was too busy so I knew that my magazine cover would have to be less busy and more simple.
The front of Q magazine is more how I would expect a magazine to appear, busy but not overly busy. It would mean that more people are likely to look at this editipon and it is also more asthetically pleasing. The three colour scheme also works on this cover but not on NMe as that includes too much colour. The picture in the middle of the page is simple yet effective it shows of the simplicity of the photo but the editing ont the picture adds a level of finesse to the picture and the magazine cover as whole.

The contents page is simple and easy to understand. I really like the idea of the boxes and the numbers inside the boxes and the simple headings to show a new topic to the reader. The idea as a whole is something that I would like to use on my magazine contents.
